Replying to a tweet from tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, Musk confirmed that the Official tag was no longer available. It seems Twitter is returning to the Blue Tick as Musk describes it as “the great level”. The platform uses a blue checkmark to verify accounts. Musk caused controversy this month when he said the company would start charging users $20 per month for their checkmark. That later became $8 per month to have an account that is verified. Musk said users with verification would have 90 days to join the paid program or their Blue Tick would be taken away. In response, thousands of prominent and regular Twitter users hit out at the plan.
Impersonator Account Ban
In an effort to appease disgruntled users who now have to pay for verification, Musk said Twitter would ban impersonator accounts without warning. Many users are unhappy they have to pay to add an official stamp of verification to their accounts. Especially because impersonator accounts are rife on Twitter. These are accounts where someone pretends to be someone they are not, such as a celebrity. Honestly, some of these are hilarious parody accounts but others are more problematic and help spread misinformation. Although, Musk says accounts that identify themselves as parody are fine. Musk also adds that Twitter will essentially throw features at the platform in the coming months to see what sticks.
